Even with a screen protector, that kind of damage can happen. If the screen is hit with anything even coming close to being pointy. Anything that puts force into a small area.

Sorta like women in high pointy heels, when they walk, the heels can impact the floor at over 1000 psi.

A screen protector can help some, but not very much to prevent that kind of damage in the right circumstances.
