(Well, actually, you can tell that it went fine even before checking if a folder pops up, by what the update process tells you at the end: if you see the 'Update Successful' screen with the checkmark, you're good to go

EDIT: And if you get an update failure at one point, dump the logs right after, that should ensure the important stuff doesn't get cleaned up by the system
