I fiercely love my Kobo Touch! Yes, most firmware versions have bugs,
some more annoying than others, and yes, Kobo Customer "Care" is a bunch of bollocks (most of the time)...

But oh. The device is great. I keep in mind that Kobo is still young, and that it's adding lots and lots of functionality to the device's firmware because Kobo's customers are asking for more. And of course, building more features into a device will cause bugs. You could say debugging doesn't work very well and I would agree, but I stay patient because eventually the firmware will be updated and problems will be solved... Yes, new problems are likely to be introduced with more new functionality, but I do see the problems becoming less and less. The current firmware is still problematic, but the newest firmware that is only available to certain Kobo Touches (new ones, and the ones in Japan) is very very stable and very near to perfect.

As for the customer "care", if you open a ticket you might get lucky and receive a response from someone who actually knows what they're talking about. But more likely, you could get automated reply about something else entirely in which case: your problem will be solved here on the forums, and much faster too.

Is it worth the risk? If you're patient and can see the whole picture: yes, absolutely. I have not seen another device that has hardware that is as lovely. The quilted back is just delicious, and so so comfortable to hold. The colours are nice. It's just a lovely design. The firmware navigation is great (and where it isn't great, improvements are being made). It's just a matter of time until the firmware is absolutely perfect and I know that Kobo won't stop trying until it is.

I could understand if you'd choose Amazon instead. Amazon just works, there's no hassle or wait.. but it's boring. Personally I think the Kindle hardware is ugly. Amazon site is a big fat waste of eyesight, it's full of all sorts of everything on one page so much so that I just don't know where to look (well, after a while I've learnt to ignore everything but the few things I'm looking at).

I just wrote this for another thread:

a) the word is now selected, and the dictionary has automatically popped up with its definition. Also, a menu bar opens at the bottom of the screen, including icons of: a highlighting pencil, a note page, a magnifying glass and a facebook logo. Highlighting the word is as simple as hitting the pencil, to make a note, just hit the note page icon. A screen comes up with a keyboard and a field to type your note into.

b) The selection mode as described above (with the menu at the bottom of the screen) is now active, but no words is yet selected. In this mode you can select any word by just tapping once (no tap-and-hold necessary [this is also true once you're in the selection mode via method (a), after closing the dictionary popup]). When one word is selected, the dictionary pops up. You have to close the popup, and then the word will be underlined and the beginning and end of the word have balloon type things attached. You can drag those balloons to select more words.

There is also a list or index somewhere of all the notes (and highlights??) you made for a particular book, but I'm afraid I can't tell you much more about it as I've never used it myself. I do recall reading on this forum somewhere that currently that list of notes has a very strange and unpredictable way of ordering itself (not alphabetically, not chronologically...)
I'm not sure about exporting notes as I've never done that. I do recall seeing a post on this forum somewhere about extracting notes via Calibre... Maybe a search for it would answer your question.

And the dictionary support is talked about here:

In short, there's (at least) English, French, German, Spanish, Dutch, Japanese, Italian, and Portuguese, and all languages translate to and from English, and all languages have their own dictionary (English word look up; French word look up etc).
