FREEDOM OF CHOICE - The Hong Kong (HK) way

I returned from my first trip to Hong Kong way back in 2005 (lived there now 3 years on and off) and found a cell phone lover's paradise just waiting to be explored. Cell phone shops line most busy streets, and no, I'm not talking about stuffy carrier stores with a limited selection of only what they want to sell.

Rather, I'm referring to full-fledged gadget shops with an untold selection of manufacturers and models, many of which I'd never seen in the flesh. It goes without saying that the offerings are light years ahead of what we get in the UK & United States, but also the entire cell phone culture is far advanced as well in HK.

One of my Yummy girl's from the past.

Per head Hong Kong has more mobile phone than any other country as most hong kong residents own normally 2-4 mobile phones at any 1 time.So giving freedom to customers to choice also increases sales for mobile phone company's .

Unlocked phones are good, carrier control is bad
Unlocked phones are not the exception in Hong Kong; they are the rule. If you want to buy a phone, you need only to pick out the model you want (and be warned, choosing from the huge selection isn't easy), take it to your carrier's store, and pop in a SIM card.

It's a nice change from being forced to choose from the phones your carrier wants you to buy. On the downside, you won't get many carrier rebates, but in return you get something novel in the cell phone world--freedom of choice.

Cell phones work everywhere
You can get a signal anywhere in Hong Kong. Whether you're on a ferry, hiking to a peak on a neighboring island, or shopping in one of the numerous malls, a cell phone signal is not a problem, and dropped calls are almost unheard of. You can even get reception on the MTR - subway or in an underwater tunnel traveling between stations.

In contrast the last time i went on the London underground i never once got a signal on my phone.
And because the signal is so good , people using their phones on the MTR in hong kong don't need to bellow at the top of their lungs like in the USA or Europe

Reasons why you would like Hong kong's mobile phone lifestyle compared to the west

Cheaper phones -example Iphones cost around 3000HKD + and are normally £100/$150 CHEAPER than in the UK & Europe.
NO SALES TAX IN Hong Kong
Huge selection of phones
ALL phones sold are Already UNLOCKED so you don't have to pay extra to give them FREEDOM
Signal coverage pretty much every where you go so no black spots.
Freedom to choice any phone with any mobile phone carrier.
REALLY cheap and huge selection of spare parts like -Batteries,replacement cases, ear phones, items to customize your phone.
