There is the fact that's it's reversible. And since the phone and the new cable haven't been torn down yet, we don't know what they do that might be beyond the capability of micro-USB. I'm willing to wait a week to find out.
When I lived in Europe, this problem had already been solved when the government made it obligatory to sell phones with a micro-USB charger. Apple got an exemption in exchange for giving free 30-pin connector to USB adapters to all its customers.
