I wasn't aware anything had changed. I've heard of people doing "the dance," where they would register a friend's Kindle to their account, load books on the device they wanted to lend to their friend, deregister, then their friend would re-register the device. The books would remain readable until they were deleted. Apparently that was common before book lending...I can't say, I don't know anyone local that owns any sort of ereader. They're behind the times.
