In case I was not clear, it was technological innovation that I was referring to. Marketing innovation is not something that I am much of an expert on, so I leave that for others.

The orginal iPhone was yet another candy bar phone with a big screen added. It was inevitable, and they lucked out on the timing by a whole lot. IOS is a derivative of the open source Unix Darwin system, so they improved it, apparently quite a lot, but they did not innovate it.

No, they might have been a lot better, but the evolution was inevitable. It was helped along by Apple but it was an evolution that would have happened anyway. I remember wishing for some of the things that eventually came to pass way back in the mid 90s. I was not an innovator then either.
