So as someone who's still a Mac user, but still likes these KFs, I'd wish the reviews were more about the device itself and not comparisons.

As long as they review the device itself, adding comparisons is helpful. Like it or not, the iPad is by and far the best selling tablet. It makes sense to compare the Kindle Fire to it.
A review of the Kindle Fire HD is not for the Amazon fans... they're already sold on the benefits of the Amazon ecosystem. It is for those who are undecided. And in their indecision, they'll be weighing the KFHD against what they have already heard of (primarily the iPad).
Depending upon a person's needs/wants, the iPad IS a better tablet. But for others, it isn't. That can happen with a fair review without the need to claim fanboy journalism.
Frankly, there has been more Google fanboyism on exhibit over the last month or so over the Nexus 7... now THAT's a tablet that has not warranted the excitement generated. If it were sold with the Coby or Pandigital branding, it would've been received with yawns.
Having said all that, I believe that the KFHD compares quite favorably with the iPad. I love the hardware. There's a high quality to it. I own two 7" Android tablets, an original KF, and an iPad 2, and I still have to exercise some self-control against buying one of the HD models. They're THAT compelling! IMO
