I have a Kindle 3 G3, and a Kindle Fire (original) as well as a Nexus 7. I have not rooted my Kindle 3 yet but have rooted my Kindle Fire and Nexus 7. I still use my Kindle 3 for most of my ebook reading as the display and battery life make it ideal.

I bought the Kindle Fire for a four month trip to Germany so I would have a way to read my emails and surf the web. It worked very well.

When the Nexus 7 came out I got one and it is a vast improvement over the Fire. Jelly Bean is much nicer then Ginger Bread on the Fire.
