I fail to see why you wouldn't install Kindle for PC. If you want the books from Amazon, then you don't have a choice.

I've installed it so I can download the books only, I never use it for reading. I download them, strip the DRM and place them in my collection and then delete them from the kindle software.

Takes seconds per book to do this.

I don't feel I've bowed (or caved) as some people suggest. If I had, I would be either reading them on the software or bought a Kindle. As I haven't, I feel that I have instead used Amazon's software to liberate the books.
