E-ink screens vary quite a bit. Another possible reason, if they replace with refurb units, those might possibly contain a higher percentage of darker, less contrasty screens because of other users returning screens they didn't like.

I'd call and try again. My first Sony T1 had a very visibly darker and less contrasty screen than my husbands T1, I got a refund and later ordered another that was fine.
