I don't know why they couldn't keep it and hammer home the message that they don't cheap out on their customers like everybody else. It looks good on a comparison chart. Kindle: 4gb. Nook, kobo, Sony: 2gb. People may not know if they need it, but they understand 4 is bigger than 2.
But the more popular a product is, the less the producer has to worry about minority or niche concerns. Which is why TTS is gone. Amazon know they already have the better brand, ecosystem, and overall product, so they don't need additional differentiators that most don't care about.
