One of my local bookshops will do this, they'll get in a hardcover, and rent a copy to those who don't want to buy, but would like to be able to read before the paperback comes out or before the library gets it.

I took advantage once, cost me $4 for the rental and well worth it.

Usually though, I am patient enough to wait until the library gets it.

Anyway, I definitely think that a book rental market might be out there.
