It always surprises me to hear how so many people consider The Gunslinger one of the weaker installments in the series. I loved it. I agree, that is a really memorable book opening.

Personally, I really did not like much of the last book. The ending wasn't horrible, assuming it can even be considered an ending. When your conclusion relies on introducing a deus ex machina character with magical stationary, you've done something really wrong. I probably should have stopped the second King leapt out of the fourth wall to explain why its the journey that matters and not the end.
