I'm more comfortable with ambient light. Even when I'm at my computer I find that it is easier on my eyes to have light in the room.

The danger for me with reading late at night isn't falling asleep, but realizing that I have just a couple of hours before I'm supposed to go to work, and I'm almost at the end of the book that I'm reading. My problem is fixed be reading less captivating books during the week. Yours might be solved with a light switch timer.

The controller is responsible for the resolution as well as refresh rates. The perceived contrast depends on the lighting conditions, and it's not possible to have a true white background since that would be a background that reflects all light, and you just can't have that with the capsules.

I'm one of the other people. I keep the brightness of my screens to a minimum, and I don't even like reading text on paper that is too white.

Sight is not as simple as receptors detecting photons. Reflected light will be diffuse. The problem might not be the part of the text that you are looking at, but the text around it.
