I'm on the waiting list for The Gunslinger at my library; I'm going to attempt a re-read of the series incorporating the new book, "The Wind Through the Keyhole."

I read the first four books in high school (around 1997). The first three books are great and the fourth is a bit boring but otherwise not terrible. The fifth book is pretty bad and the sixth book was so awful I only read half of it. I've never read book seven but I've read the Wikipedia synopsis so I know how it ends.
