Not having anything better to hand she used antiseptic Savlon cream (not sure if it's a UK only brand?), and all seems well today.

I agree wholeheartedly that the cacti shouldn't be in the house (this isn't my first mishap with the little bleeders - a little while ago I couldn't stop my reflex action of catching one as it fell from a window sill, and ended up with "killing arrows" in both hands). I have mentioned the fact they they need to be moved often, to the extent that my wife is getting tired of hearing it. "But they are my babies, I've nurtured them since birth" etc. etc. The UK weather isn't exactly conducive to outdoor living for many plants - not sure how cacti would cope (at this point, not sure I care).
