I have never had a problem with manual firmware updates, and I have gone backwards and forwards a few times recently before 2.1.1 came out to try and find a favorite, sometimes trying several in a day.
That said, I exclusively use sideloaded epubs, so my use case might be unusual. I don't know if e.g. the database gets annoyed if you futz around too much with firmware versions.
