I didn't read that entire mess, where "diff" magically changes a single line difference into 8 lines of output, but ...

You do need one of the init systems.
Does the K3 (and this busybox) use the standard SYSV init system?
Not using mdev and systemd would then be reasonable (grep for SYSV).
