You are not alone in that experience. Some people thought it was a microphone or a speaker. Anything but a Home button (even after failing an exhaustive search FOR a Home button). Very non-intuitive design. Product design FAIL!

Perhaps the new kindle DOES have a Home button, but this time they did a "better" job of hiding it?
