We get what we call "Midgies", though I'm not sure they're the same thing as the Scottish variety (we mostly get them down near the river mouth, or in the dunes). They seem to be seasonal. Annoying little buggers, visible only as a little dot on you unless you've got good eyesight. They're easy to swipe and kill, but there is usually so many of them that the best defense is to keep moving. Mosquitos we have, but not in huge abundance. I've never felt the need for Aerogard for them. I suspect all the other insects (spiders, wasps, hornets) birds and fish (in standing water) might keep their numbers down a little.
