OK, I have performed the patching process described in the links that Booxtor provided. There is good news and bad news.

The good one is that the patching process is not that complicated as it appears (due to confusing instructions magnified by the poor machine translation of google). If someone is interested in clear instructions I can put one together, but the bad news is that it is not worth the bother. Not because it is something only geeks can perform, and not because it would spoil the M92, but because the improvement is not good enough.

Now after the patching there are 16 clearly recognizable different shades of gray, but the distribution is still not smooth and linear. With other words, there is still a sharp darkening between the 11th and 12th shades; the difference between the 12th and 13th is hardly recognizable, while there is again a more prominent jump from 13th to 14th.

The result is that the mentioned photo distortions are still present.

The patching process is also slightly different than demonstrated in the tutorial video. After clicking the MfgTool Start button one can see the progress of the update for a while, until it arrives to the

"Jumping to OS image".

Then it suddenly stops with an error message:

Updater Error 0xffff0000 (-65536) -

First I thought we have got a problem here, because the M92 was frozen and could not turn it on. But after pressing the reset button it works now again. Seeing the error message I thought that the patching was unsuccessful, but it has still performed some changes, because the shade distribution improved somewhat. Oddly enough, the Screen Waveform ID didn't change.

Conclusion is that we still have to wait for a new update or patch that would provide a decent linear gray-scale distribution.
