It detects not just the acceleration of gravity from 90-degree rotates, but also manually-generated acceleration events (like a shake). A quick jerk of only a few degrees will generate a pair of inverse rotation events (acceleration and deceleration), according to testing I did when I first got my K5. They are reported as right/up/left events though (assuming gravity to be the measured force instead of manually generated acceleration).
