I don't think it's so much that they want to steal Apple's thunder as they don't want to be drowned out by Apple's thunder. Apple's thunder will be just as loud no matter what Amazon announces..

And if Apple was the reason for the exact timing -- why wouldn't the others wait for that magical new product and then try to tweak their own designs after the Apple announcement? Once, when Apple still was the design leader, Samsung did that.

Apple has traditionally used October to announce iPod products (and April to announce iPad products); this slot has been taken over by the iPhone. Other products won't wait until afterwards because they wouldn't be able to tweak their designs and get them produced in time for Xmas.
