I use both an iPhone and a Kindle for reading but I choose one over the other depending on the circumstances. I don't notice any discomfort reading on an LCD.

I prefer to read on my phone when in dark conditions, such as before falling asleep. Setting the brightness to low and using white text on a black background is easier and quicker than attaching a clip-on light to my Kindle and adjusting it. Lighter too.

In bright conditions, I prefer e-ink. Its readability seems to improve as ambient light increases, and it beats LCD in battery life. My fallback option is my phone. I've found that I can read on it even in sunlight by turning down the brightness all the way and using black letter on a light background. The sun seems to shine through the LCD layer and cast distinct word-shaped shadows on the background.
