No, 25 books were put on the Heinlein shelf, and 5 on the Wells shelf, and they are still there. They do get removed from the carousel when completed, though. I hope mine is the correct behaviour, because I'd be unhappy if Kobo think that removing books from shelves because they have been completed is an acceptable way of doing things!
Unfortunately, I haven't any suggestions for you, merely letting you now that I see different behaviour than you describe.

Almost the same behaviour as mine, but mine always goes to the cover when sleeping, and then to the text when it goes to auto power off (but, based on a quick test, not when powered off from the switch). I think davidfor's comments are really the case - there is a bug that shows up on some machines but not others.
