Maybe I'm doing this wrong: I attach the Kindle to my computer and double click on it, I put the bin in the "root" folder, NOT in the screensaver file or the linkss file.
I put the Kindle icon in the trash to disconnect then "update your kindle." The update "failed" all three times on this last sequence of tries and the nasty dead authors still elusive.
I did initially install the hacks shortly after the K3g was released. There were software updates but the version of the hack I used enabled me to update the software on my kindle without having to uninstall the hacks. Just FYI in case it's relevant.
