The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett - a tongue firmly in cheek fantasy of how Queen Elizabeth discovered the joys of reading (with a little help from her corgis, a gay kitchen boy, and the bookmobile) - this is a charming, funny, slightly acerbic look at the monarchy that simultaneously displays a deep love of both reading and the silliness of the royal family. It's a novella and can be read in one sitting - I command everyone in this thread to read it at once! And I am unanimous in this!
