Yes, I really can't emphasise enough what an absolutely awful experience SONY customer 'service' has been for me. It got to a point where I swore I'd never by a SONY product again, and I still stand by that.
Having said that, I love my T1, and initially liked it more than my Kindle. Kindle has slowly won me over, though, with the sync across devices and the ease with which to download new books to the e-reader. I still use both because I shop at a lot of non amazon book shops, so I use my Kindle for Amazon and T1 for everything else.
