I have a 32 GB fast SD card and more than 9000 books on it. It works. The more collections, the more problems. So I keep my collections neat and tiny in Calibre.
Series are also collections, so watch out!
I also make subcollections like historical novel, historical detective, etc.
So sub-collections in the name.
Every now and then the contentmanager of the reader gives up and after a short black screen it starts in the home screen. But I do like to have all my books with me, so I can change what I want.
It is not ideal, had a pocketbook e-reader before and worked with directories, worked quite smooth. But the more books, he more problems.

I think the collection search is also nice: you can give a book different labels, which could be found with the collectionmanager, but the book only uses one space on the sd-card.
