According to wikipedia Aero is a backronym for Authentic, Energetic, Reflective, and Open.
As I was looking to see if Metro was a backronym as well I found this:
Microsoft: It was never 'Metro,' it was always 'Modern UI'
Despite the title of the article, the author seems to think that it wasn't always 'Modern UI'.
