Question re Kindle and library borrowing

One of the reasons I wanted to get a Kindle was to simplify library e-book borrowing. I could have e-books sent to a Kindle wirelessly, where I have to download the book on my PC and then sideload them to my Nook.

I just put a hold on a library book, happy to be able to avoid the sideloading, when I saw that under "Kindle" on the e-book, it said, "for use on Kindle devices transferred by USB only."

Does anyone know why that is and if it will become standard? It's very annoying.
