Ah, that's because you probably didn't read the book and see the series in such close proximity. The missing element is:

In the book, David Powlett-Jones' wife and ONE of their daughters is killed in the car crash. The second daughter survives and plays a significant role in helping him get over the grief, as well as connecting him back to the school via her teas.

In the BBC/PBS TV series, both daughters die, and we basically skip fairly quickly over that whole period after the accident.

It's easy to not notice the omission in the TV series, since they did a very good job of the transition. I didn't notice it the first time I read the book, right after I'd watched the series originally on PBS, but this time, having just read the book before watching the series, I was looking for it and wondering how they were going to handle it (and who was going to play the part.)
