Yeah, Sony does that. I love it. For epubs, it's based on the ADE calculation; for RTF, it's based on calculating screens-sized pages, and changes when you resize the text.
Other readers use different methods--some show a percentage; some just have an unlabeled progress bar; I suspect some make it downright difficult to sort out where you are in the book.
