I did indeed have that pleasure.
Sufficed to say I am speaking from a 32 bit version of mint. (I too run the Amd64 chipset)
The pain was just too much. The horrible and gory details are
here and me just giving up occurs around
here when I ditched 64 bits altogether and discovered I had a faulty DVD drive just for extra fun
I have abandoned all efforts to x-compile from slackware other than trivial programs that I would write myself.
Having used the 64 & 32 bit versions of both OSś now slack and Mint I can report very little difference, sure perhaps my big ram doesn´t hump but having 4 processors rather makes a joke of such considerations. It was only
a decade ago two decades ago? (Bejeebers where does the time go?) I had to wait all bloody night to render a fractal.
Given the gory and flaky alternative I will be going pure 32 bit native for all x-compilation work for a very long time until someone does a really good job of convincing me otherwise. Life is too short.
One note: The Cinnamon process appears buggy in the 13 Mint and makes my machine hang. LxDE does not suffer from this limitation. word to the wise and all that.
