So the invoice is backdated to 11th April (actually invoiced 17th) and due on the 24th. On the 30th of April because it was paid late, they charged 14.4% /12 of the total amount outstanding!

Sounds to me like a deliberate scam so they can charge extra. Does Oz have some sort of consumer protection agency? If so, a complaint to them might be in order.
Here, back dating an invoice is a no-no! And I believe they have to give you 10 days.
