The battery is connected inside by 3 wires which have to be soldered to the motherboard if you do it yourself. Doing it oneself would, I expect, invalidate the warranty if that was still in effect.
That said I would think that the battery, unless some problem with it, may last the life of the reader (within reason) if it is similar to other consumer items with the battery not user replacable.

I agree - but don't continually shut-down or allow battery to run right down a lot.
Both these affect battery lifespan. Only hut down if not going to use for a couple of weeks plus.
