My only problem with fan fiction, and one I've seen writers mention before, is its seductive nature. The feedback is immediate, and often flattering. The writing itself couldn't be easier. You have pre-made characters with well known back-stories and motivations. One writer I know of had to finally kick his fanfic habit in order to concentrate on "real" writing.
