The actual damage might have been done before you set it down on your desk, and the crack has just appeared either when you set it down or picked it up, that quite often seems to be how it goes with screen damage.

Something leaning against the screen, a slight twist or flex, even if you try and take good care of it and have it in a case, it can happen. I try never to carry mine in a bag next to any other hard objects as that seems to be a common way for it to happen. There's nothing you can do to fix it so you'll need to replace it, and you might as well use the accidental damage cover you have to do so.
