Lots of research later it looks like there may be a shell extension conflict with a corrupt .dll file
.cpl No Property Handler Windows Shell Common Dll 6.1.7601.17514 (win7sp1_rtm.101119-1850) Microsoft® Windows® Operating System Microsoft Corporation No No No No No No C:\Windows\system32\shell32.dll {66742402-F9B9-11D1-A202-0000F81FEDEE} 1/08/2012 6:07:26 AM 14/07/2009 2:53:38 PM Yes A 14,172,672 No

looks like this is the culprit - but it is in the system shell and loathe to disable it.
despite a recent full reinstall this little nasty seems to be the prob that persists.
I havent been able to get the same message for calibre but I am betting there is a link....and I think it is when I eject calibre as i can reproduce the explorer crash by ejecting usb flash drive..

will keep you posted!
