This is true. In the original film itself, I believe the role was credited to a question mark, like the monster's role by Karloff was represented in
Frankenstein. It was the studio's way of adding a bit of mystery to the film. The makers of
Shadow of the Vampire played on this "mystery" element in their 2000 film by having the
Nosferatu director hire a "real" vampire to play the part. Of course, the actor Max Shreck was never mentioned in
Shadow of the Vampire.
