@Sleepseeker - This is a long shot
A couple of months ago I saw a similar problem on a friends machine, "Excel has stopped working" and Windows went off to fail to find a solution.
I did some searching and found an obscure reference that indicated it could be caused by dodgy codecs. So I uninstalled the video & audio codecs she had and some RAW codecs for her image viewer and refreshed excel - voila no sign of the problem. I downloaded the current versions of the codecs from K-Lite and FastPictureViewer, still no problems and none since.
I think it was the K-Lite codecs, the version she had installed were quite old. It could be that a Windows update and old codecs didn't play well together.
