Depends.

I think that (can) apply to more specific sub-genres.

Space Opera for example has specific plot elements, as well as Paranormal Romance (not to be confused with Urban Fantasy). Steampunk does not.

Epic Fantasy, Sword & Sorcery, Military SF, has some tropes, archetypes, etc.
