Well (speaking here as android user mind you) android IS safe, the biggest security flaw is the user, not the OS. As to hardware durability, it's all made in china.
The big plus side of android, no need of iTunes
Question that might have it's importance, what PC os are you using ?
Android is customisable. Dont like the keyboard ? change it ! don't like sms app ? change it ! You just can't do that with iOS.
