Just to explain what happened - if you use Find Duplicates, then by default it will put calibre into that "highlight search" mode (it is not the case that you necessarily accidentally clicked on it).

If when you are done working with Find Duplicates you choose its "Clear duplicate results" option, OR you hit the ESC key, OR you click on the clear search button to the right of the search bar then calibre will automatically go back to whatever highlighting mode you had previously (as well as resetting search restrictions etc). Any of those should be your preferred ways of exiting search results and going back to doing normal calibre operations to avoid hitting this problem again.

itimpi is spot on in explaining how to toggle the highlighting search mode, but it is likely not the only thing that needs resetting when exiting Find Duplicates "mode".
