Look in the Kobo Vox forums for tips on alternate app stores and specific apps. There has been a lot of discussion there since the launch in October 2011 because it originally did not have access to the Play Store.
This particular thread had a lot of suggestions for alternate stores and apps that can be gotten without rooting:

As far as stores go, you can add Aptoide, http://m.aptoide.com/ , Goodereader app store
http://goodereader.com/apps/ or getjar, handago, slideme by going directly to their home/developer pages.
