Well just an update for those who might come across this issue in the future, I found what was causing the problem. In between me running the older version of Calibre and now wanting to upgrade I had changed the nameserver on my local laptop and media centre from the ISP DNS server to the router. So obviously something with the DNS settings on the router caused a resolution issue.
Problem now solved. Might be of help to the next person.
