My current cats don't go out, but I have a cockatiel. Jinian, the older female, thinks the bird is beneath her notice (even when he's flying overhead), but Hermes, the only slightly younger male (he's about 15) wants to play with Lillis in the worst way. But he knows he's not supposed to. I shouldn't laugh, but there's little funnier to watch than a cat struggling with its conscience. Lillis the cockatiel, meanwhile, is completely oblivious. He only notices Hermes if Hermes is getting attention and he's not.
Many years ago, however, a stray we'd adopted brought in a bluejay. And it was only stunned. We came home to find it on the shower curtain rod in the bathroom, NOT HAPPY.

Took two of us with leather gloves and a bucket to get it out.
