Sorry, I guess I was misremembering from back around the holidays when I set it up
I didn't go through Play, but grabbed some apps for my mom from a list someone put together on a blog. The Fire does give you access to the "allow unapproved apps" setting, though, which is more than some devices do. The main thing she was after was an EPUB reader, and I believe I found her an old Mantano APK.
And I did try to help all the Fire owners before they became Fire owners by pointing out what a mediocre device it was
