Carolingian, I have observed a definite dichotomy between the reviews of "Hunger Games". It is either a love it or hate it scenerio. In my experience, the author was too focussed on the action (it reminded me of the storylines behind Xena Warrior Princess) and completely snubbed character development. In the end, I scarcely cared whether the main characters lived or died. Where emotion was supposed to be evoked, I vacantly absorbed black words on a white page.

On the other side of the fence, I have spoken to people who loved all three books. I made it through about half of the second one and could go no further. Like I said, it reminded me of a Saturday afternoon action television series shot in New Zealand.

As for Shades... I did notice more character development in that novel - but in a fashion that did not really speak to me.

As much as I enjoy voicing my displeasure for wasted time on 2 dimensional novels, I do feel grateful that we live in a world where there is a medium to satisfy all tastes. And books like Twilight, Hunger Games and even Shades get people reading and away from their X Boxes. Bravo !
